TIPS FOR AN OUTDOORS SUMMER

By Thomas Edge, Sportsworld, Gisborne

As you read this, it’s probably time to hang up your winter fleece and store your rugby, soccer or hockey boots for the start of another world famous kiwi summer. Just the thought of it conjures up so many different images – basking in the sun by a beach or river, surf casting after work – especially if you live on the East Coast. And checking the state of the gear you stored from last year.

  • Tent? Erect it before you need it. Remember the bent pole? Or the camp next door that “borrowed” any spare pegs you had. Talk to your Sportsworld store about replacements.
  • Tested your LPG bottle? Gas lantern for glass cracks? Get a few more mantles for reserve.
  • Is your airbed staying up?

Make a checklist covering all the gear you use to avoid being caught out at the last moment.

You can’t stay at a beach and not go diving if there are rocks nearby. Mask and fin strops break at the worst time – e.g. just before entering the water miles from your nearest Sportswear store (believe me, I know)!

Fishing in this country offers a huge range of options – from kids’ fishing off the wharf, surfcasting, spinning, bottom fishing and game fishing, to fresh water trolling and fly fishing to name a few. Common to all is fishing line – arguably the most important yet most overlooked essential. It needs changing every year – ask your Sportsworld store for a condition assessment if you’re unsure.

If you prefer a summer on the land walking, tramping or camping (and we have amazing tracks and parks in this country), ask your Sportsworld store about tramping socks and walking poles. They make a world of difference. Outdoor opportunities are endless in our country – and more enjoyable if you remember to “be prepared.”

So don’t leave it until the last minute…planning in advance will ensure you really do have great summer outdoors.
