KEEPING FIT FOR WINTER

By Jeanette Gash, Sportsworld, Tokoroa

Cold and foggy mornings, dark and drizzly evenings- who wants to think about fitness at this time of the year? But if you want to maintain the level of fitness you achieved over summer and survive winter in the same shape (or better!) as you started then need to think how you will do it.

We all know the importance of keeping fit - the obvious health benefits are numerous and there are the psychological benefits too. But how do we maintain general fitness over the dreary winter months?

There are a number of ways - walking/running, weight training, gyms, and indoor sports to name a few.

As we generally spend more time indoors over winter, the local gym is often the first place people think of to keep fit. However, not everyone feels comfortable exercising in front of others. And for many - travelling to the gym, parking, queuing for equipment and ongoing fees can be a hassle.

So talk with your local Sportsworld about having your own gym at home! A home gym needs only to include a few simple pieces of equipment to work effectively. A rowing machine, treadmill or exercycle for cardio workouts, a weight bench or swiss ball for toning exercises and an elliptical trainer for an all over workout and you are set to go. Sportsworld stocks Infiniti fitness equipment for all your fitness requirements.

If your budget doesn’t stretch to purchasing this equipment or perhaps you prefer to “try before you buy”, discuss the possibility of renting or renting to own. Ask your local Sportsworld owner about options.

However you choose to keep fit over winter, it is important to wear the correct shoes and clothing. You will be much more comfortable and your performance will be more enjoyable if you do. Try on items for proper fit, particularly your footwear as a lot of damage can be done with ill-fitting shoes. And don’t forget to add extra layers if exercising outside in the cold.

Happy exercising!
